EPISODE 34:

THE PRESSURE OF PERFECTION

WITH ALLY BROOKE

You can imagine I was just crying, completely devastated because my worst nightmare had come true. My fears were validated. People were telling me what I was already thinking. You’re not enough. You’re not beautiful. You’re not accepted. And that can rip anyone apart.

- Ally Brooke, Member of Fifth Harmony & Author of “Finding Your Harmony”

So often when we see people on stage, on TV, in the limelight, we think…

Wow, they must be so happy. They really have it all together.

It’s hard to remember that what we see online rarely tells a full story. When we see someone who has a big smile and a big life, it’s really easy to believe they have their whole life under control.

We have to be diligent in reminding ourselves that what we see is only a curated, edited highlight reel. What most people don’t realize is that the more success you see, the more people start watching your every move. With more attention comes more external pressure to conform - to act, look, and live a certain way.

If you are not careful, you can lose your authentic self pretty quickly.

Ally Brooke first burst onto the music scene as a member of Fifth Harmony. Since then she has embarked on a solo career, releasing her own hit singles, joining the twenty-eighth season of Dancing with the Stars, and showing people everywhere the rewards of hard work and faith. In this episode, Lisa and Ally talk about overcoming the pressure to be perfect, overcoming body shame, and how to stay true to yourself while in the face of external forces. They discuss:

  • Overcoming body shame while in the public eye

  • Life after Fifth Harmony and paving a solo singing career

  • How she embraces her Latina roots in her career

  • Why Ally has chosen to have no sex before marriage

  • The importance of picking meaningful projects and the right team

  • How Ally defines success for herself

Thanks for listening, I appreciate you, and am here for you.
